Organix Hydrating Tea Tree Mint Shampoo and Conditioner {Review}

While at the store the other day, I was in desperate need of a new shampoo. I have oily hair and dandruff, and my itchy scalp was driving me crazy. I try to avoid regular dandruff shampoos, but after doing some research, I found that Tea Tree oil shampoos are an effective dandruff treatment.

As much as I would like a 100% natural shampoo, I wasn’t expecting to find that at my local Walmart. The main ingredients I want to avoid are SLS and Parabens. This product claims to be Sulfate and Paraben free, but the ingredients list still looked kind of suspicious (Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate?) It also claims to have “Organic Active Ingredients”. Hmmm…

But like I said, I was desperate, and as much as I love my Aubrey Organics Camomile Luxurious Volumizing Shampoo, it’s not meant to treat an itchy scalp (but it does bring out the natural highlights in my hair!) I could not find a Tea Tree shampoo at Aubrey Organics, but they have the Green Tea Shampoo. I wonder if that would be similar. I could not find any definitive information comparing the two.

So, I’ve been using this product for about a week now, and I must say, my itchy scalp is gone. I don’t think there is much Tea Tree oil in this product, but whatever amount there is worked amazingly. It doesn’t smell at all like Tea Tree. It actually has a very strong peppermint smell, which I love, but some people might find it overwhelming. I didn’t think it was particulary hydrating, but it certainly didn’t dry out my hair. I could go a day in between washings, and my hair still looked fairly clean.

All in all, I don’t think this was a bad purchase. It’s definitely not 100% natural, but the ingredients I’m most concerned about have supposedly been eliminated, it works great for me, and the price can’t be beat. I will continue to use this until I find a better alternative.

Edit (11/22/09 @ 10:50 PM): According to several websites, including this one: “Green tea also has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, and may benefit people with itchy scalps and dandruff.” So, I think I’ll try the Aubrey Organics Green Tea shampoo when I run out of the Organix. (I don’t want to be wasteful!)
