I don’t buy shampoo, but my hair is clean!

I know I’ve blogged about my hair woes before. My hair has a similar personality as my face: oily AND dry, with flakies that make me avoid black clothing like the plague…

Since I’ve been a poser an active participant in “green” and “crunchy” communities all over the internet, I keep reading about no-pooing. No, it’s not what you’re thinking. No-poo is the method of washing your hair without conventional shampoos, using baking soda and apple cider vinegar (ACV).

I was reluctant to try it, reading horror stories of hair looked like it hadn’t been washed in a decade, and reeked of pickles. But at the time, I was still on maternity leave, and sleep was more important that showers. Plus, I very rarely left the house anyway, so it seemed like the perfect time to try it. My hair couldn’t look much worse, right?

My hair looked amazing. My scalp didn’t itch. I could wear black with abandon!

I am a true believer. I will never go back to regular shampoo. (In fact, I went out of town recently and used conventional shampoo for the first time in months. My hair was so oily, it looked wet all day. Gross!)

Everyone has their own procedure for no-pooing. It’s kind of a trial and error thing.

I use a baby bottle and fill up the baking soda to the 1 oz line, then fill the rest with water. Pour this mixture on my scalp only, massage in, and let sit while I wash my face, then rinse.

For the ACV part, I use a spray bottle with a mix of half ACV and half water. I spray this on the bottom half of my hair only (pull your hair into a low ponytail with your hand, spray only below your hand to the ends of hair.). I may need to modify this part though, because i think I need something more moisturizing. I might try this conditioner from The Pistachio Project.

Using this method, I can go every other day (sometimes three days) without washing my hair. I definitely could not do that with regular shampoos and conditioners!!

So I have to ask, do you smell like pickles? I hate the smell of vinegar.

If I do, no one has mentioned it to me! lol

(I do rinse the vinegar out, though, which I don’t think I mentioned in the post. It would probably make a huge difference if I didn’t!)
