It’s been a few months now, and things are getting into a more predictable routine, so I finally have time to sit down and write Baby #2’s birth story!
It was the night before my 37 week appointment. As with my first son, I went into labor around 11 pm. But this time, even though the contractions kept me up all night, they were not consistent, so I didn’t think it was the real deal. Finally, around 8 am the next morning, they had fallen into a pattern, and I knew it was time to head to the hospital. So, I woke up husband and son #1 and threw my bags in the car.
Husband called his parents to meet us there, so they could take care of big brother. I texted my family, “Do y’all know anyone who has a birthday today?” (December is a big birthday month for our friends and family, I thought for sure he’d be born on my grandmother’s birthday on the 12th!) My sister texted back, “Does this mean you’re on your way to the hospital?!” I told her we were, so she said to keep her posted, and she’d head over in a while. (She lives close by, and her son was actually born at the same hospital 6 months before!) My mom had over a two hour drive ahead of her, so she left ASAP.
We got to the hospital around 9:30 am, and they monitored me for a bit. DH got big brother situated with his parents (God bless them, they were a huge help!), then came back to wait with me. They got me moved into a delivery room, and we waited some more. DH made some phone calls, and did work on his laptop. I tried to sleep since I hadn’t the night before. I got my epidural and my sister showed up at 11-ish with lunch for DH (none for me, obviously haha).
Around 11:45, my doctor came in to break my water. She said I was only at about 7 cm, so it would probably be a few hours, so she would be back in a while. DH came back from visiting with his parents and son #1 in the waiting area, and the nurse came in around 12:30 because they lost baby’s heartbeat on the monitor. She fiddled with it for a while, and DH joked that maybe the baby was already out! lol We all laughed at that, and she checked under the blanket. DH headed back out to make some phone calls for work, while my sister and I chatted, and the nurse kept messing with the monitor.
Then all of the sudden, there he was! On the bed, under the blanket! He slide right out like a log ride at an amusement park, and I didn’t feel a thing. No pushing at all. Just…baby! My sister flew out of the room and chased my husband down the hall, shouting “THE BABY’S HERE!” Four or five nurses ran into the room, along with my DH, and they sprang into action. I had no idea what was going on, and DH looked scared. Thankfully, everything turned out ok, and our second baby boy was here! Three weeks early, but healthy. 🙂
