    Five Years Old!

    Little man –

Five years old. I can’t believe it.

Last year’s interest in superheroes was fleeting. We are now knee-deep into the worlds of Pokémon and Minecraft. That’s what the big kids like, after all.

You are a great artist and storyteller. (You obviously get this skill from your father.) You’ve excelled at swim lessons this summer. In May, you didn’t even want to put your face underwater. Now, you love to wear your goggles to practice swimming in the bathtub…lol

You have one more year of Pre-K starting this week. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store!

    Love you lots and lots!

Life Lately – Mom of Two Boys

So, it’s been 6 months since I blogged… That seems to be what happens when I have a big life event. It’s good to be back!

In case you don’t follow me on Facebook or Instagram, I had a baby boy in December!

    1464672962162

It’s been quite an adjustment to our new normal as a family of four. Little Brother is a good baby, though. Much easier than my first, but I don’t know if that’s his disposition or the fact that I’ve done this before.

Big Brother is handling the changes very well. He is in his second semester of Pre-K 4, and loves school, especially art class. I’ve already enrolled him in Pre-K 5 for next fall. (He technically could start Kindergarten, but with a late August birthday – one week before the Sept 1st cutoff, I decided to keep him in Pre-K one more year.) I’m also starting to make summer plans for him, including an art camp and maybe swim lessons.

Several posts are in the works, including a long awaited 4 year birthday interview, and baby’s 1 month and 2 month updates, so keep an eye out for those!

    Happy 4th Birthday!

    Little man –

How are you four years old already?! Time is just flying by! Three was a good year overall, but “threenager” is a very accurate term! lol Things steadily improved as you got closer to four, though.

You’re really into superheroes now (Transformers, Iron Man, Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, etc.), but you still like dinosaurs, too. You love to tell stories, and attempt to sing the theme songs to your favorite shows. You prefer to be outside (especially swimming, which you’re much more confident with this year than last). Everyday you ask me if we’re going to school, so I guess that means you’re looking forward to starting Pre-K in a couple of weeks. lol

I can’t wait to see you become a big brother, and teach your little brother everything that you know!

    Love you lots and lots!

    How We Homeschool {Preschool and Pre-K}

We’re almost halfway through our school year, so I thought I would write a post about how we homeschool with a preschool curriculum. (I know that some of y’all are curious since I’ve mentioned it on Facebook and Instagram.)

    homeschoolpreschool

After reviewing several programs and types of preschool curriculum, I found the 3 Year Curriculum at ABC Jesus Loves Me at the end of September, and it is working really well for us.  All of the lesson plans and worksheets are free to use and print (for in-home, immediate family use only), and there are a ton of supportive ideas to enhance the weekly lessons.

In the 3 Year program, each week’s lesson includes a variety of things, including: Book of the Week, Bible Story/Verse/Song, Poem & Rhyme, Colors, Shapes, Letters, Numbers, Learning to Write, and Motor Skills. Since he’s so young, we spend less than an hour a day on formal lessons, therefore we don’t usually cover everything in an entire week.  I alter the lesson plan to focus mostly on letters, numbers, Bible story, learning to write, and motor skills. We have reviewed colors and shapes, but he already knows the material that is being covered this year in those subjects.

Since we’ve had such good luck with this curriculum so far, my husband and I have decided not to put our son in a formal Pre-K program next fall, and just continue with ABC Jesus Loves Me’s 4 Year Curriculum.  He’s an August baby, so we had already decided to hold him back an extra year from Kindergarten anyway.  The plan is to enroll him in a Transition program for young 5 year olds in Fall 2016 (or maybe we’ll use the 5 Year Curriculum instead!), then he will start Kindergarten the following year.

If you’re looking for a free, complete, Christian-based preschool and Pre-K curriculum for your 2-5 year olds, check out ABC Jesus Loves Me. I hope you love it as much as we do!

    {I received no compensation for this review of ABC Jesus Loves Me. I just really like it, and I think it would be a blessing for your family!}

Out of my Element – Raising Boys

“Mommy, you be Rollout. I’m Bumblebee. Fight!”

    “Ummm…ok…which one is Rollout again?”

I want to be Bumblebee, because it's pretty obvious which one he is!

I want to be Bumblebee, because it’s pretty obvious which one he is!

As my son gets older, I realize that I am severely out of my element when it comes to his new interests. (I mean, I can finally pronounce most of the dinosaur names now, and he’s loved those for years. Let’s just stick with that!)

At almost 3.5 years old, he is diving headfirst into the world of Ninja Turtles, Transformers, and Skylanders. I’m not a girly girl by any means, but I am so clueless about raising boys with these toys…

(Speaking of Skylanders…is there a GOAL to this game? What am I trying to accomplish while I wander aimlessly?)

So, I continue to grow as a boy mom. Spending my days learning the names of “robots in disguise”, and dodging the Shellraiser full of Ninja Turtles as it speeds through the kitchen. 🙂 And I’m sure once I finally have all of this down, he’ll abandon it completely for something else…lol

Do you ever feel completely out of your element when it comes to your child’s interests?

**Edited to add: Yes, I realize girls can play with these toys, too. I’m not being sexist. I just HAVE a BOY, and as a young girl, I knew nothing about superheroes and such (even with a younger brother). So, I’m just going by my experiences.

    3 Year Old Birthday Interview

** Affiliate links ahead! Click and support PGM! Thanks!

In case you missed my previous post, I have a “threenager”! I decided now that he’s old enough to (more or less) answer me when I ask questions, that it would be fun to do an interview with him every year to see how his likes change as he grows. 🙂

I borrowed these questions from A Beautiful Ruckus. After browsing Pinterest for an hour, hers were my favorite and, in my opinion, most able to grow with a child through the years. A couple of pins I found asked things like, “What do you take to bed with you every night?” and “What do you think about when you go to sleep?” Ummm…I will NOT ask my son that at 16. lol

His answers are in bold, my comments are in parentheses/italics.

    • How old are you?: Triangle! (A triangle has three sides…so…that kind of counts?)
    • What makes you happy?: Cars do
    • What is your favorite animal?: Crocodile, see like this “chomp chomp”
    • What is your favorite color?: Green (He was looking at something green, so we’ll just go with it.)
    • What is your favorite thing to eat?: Orange Strawberries (He does love strawberries.)
    • What is your least favorite thing to eat?: Broccomoni (Broccoli)
    • What is your favorite thing to do?: Play cars
    • What is your favorite TV show?: Ankylosaurus (His favorite dinosaur on Dinosaur Train. I thought he would say that for favorite animal, too.)
    • What is your favorite movie?: (He doesn’t have the patience to sit through an entire movie!)
    • What are you really good at?: Race cars
    • What is your favorite song?: EIEIO (Old MacDonald)
    • What do you and Mom do together?: You wanna color with my paper.  (We were coloring at the time.)
    • What do you and Dad do together?: First he wants to take the trash out with me.  (Daddy was going to take the trash out, and he wanted to help.)
    • What is your favorite book?: Dogs dinosaur skeleton (See Me Run by Paul Meisel. Dogs dig up a dinosaur skeleton that chases them. It’s a really cute story!)
    • What do you want to be when you grow up?: *stares blankly* (I reword the question “What do you want to be when you’re big like Daddy?”)  Littler (of course!)
