2012 Winter Wrap-up #6: Giving Green

We’re wrapping up the Winter Wrap-up Series with this post.

I guess I wouldn’t be The Practically Green Mom without giving you at least some tips on greener gifts this holiday.

1. Green Toys My First Stacker – This was one of my son’s first toys, and he still loves it. It’s made in the USA from recycled milk jugs!

2. Wooden Toys – Etsy has a great selection of handmade wooden toys available! Blocks, cars, trains…oh my! There’s even a personalized BOWLING SET!

3. Piggy Paint – This MistleToes Gift Pack includes three colors: Sometimes Sweet (red), Ice Cream Dream (teal), and Glass Slippers (white). Piggy Paint uses an odorless, Water-based formula, that is non-toxic and hypoallergenic!

4. Soy Candles – A quick search on Etsy for soy candles brings up 30,142 items. I bet this Hazelnut Vanilla Coffee Latte one smells AWESOME!

5. The sCharger-5 High Performance Solar Charger – Compatible for iPhone, iPod, Android Phones, Samsung Galaxy, eReaders, and Many Other USB Devices. Charges direct from the sun to your device – you can charge, talk and surf at the same time!

2012 Winter wrap-up #5: Toddler Toys for FREE!

I know I just did a post about gifts for the kids this holiday season, but you know the old saying about giving a kid a gift, but he’ll just play with the box? {Or something like that, I don’t know…you get the point!} This post is the for the budget-minded mommas who realize that this is, in fact, true for most toddlers {like my son!} Here are some gifts for your kids that don’t require you to necessarily buy anything…and as a bonus, you don’t have to wrap anything either!

A broom!

Anything in the kitchen

Laundry (clean or dirty!)

Toilet paper

2012 Winter wrap-up #4: Don’t Forget the Kiddos!

Alright, Cyber Monday is over. Back to our regularly scheduled programming!

This time we’re talking about gifts for the kids! Like they would let you forget Christmas…they’ve probably been talking about it non-stop since the 4th of July!

Here are some fun ideas for kids of all ages, including a few things on {Hunter}’s wish list! A lot of these gifts could overlap between age groups, but I placed them where I thought they would fit best at the younger end of the spectrum. (Indulge me for a moment while I pretend to sound knowledgeable about “what the kids are into these days”. You will notice after the “2-4 years” section, I basically start making stuff up, as that’s where my expertise ends.)

Birth-24 months

Sophie the Giraffe Teether – This is a wonderful product for a young baby who’s just starting to teeth. It’s the perfect size for little hands to hold at different angles. It’s BPA Free, and made of 100% natural rubber and food paint.

Munchkin Mozart Magic Cube – My son loves music, and this toy is one of his favorites! The buttons are big, and easy for him to press. It plays classical music, so it’s less annoying (in my opinion) that most other baby toys!

Step2 Push Around Buggy – My son got this for his birthday from my SIL, and he loves it. He gets frustrated when he can’t move in it by himself, though. We take him out on walks in this now. It’s a great alternative to a stroller.

LeapFrog My Pal – This is one thing {Hunter} is getting for Christmas this year. The purple one pictured is Violet, but his is Scout, the green one. You can customize it to say your child’s name and favorite things. (Internet connection required.)

2 to 4 Years

Mega Bloks Play ‘n Go Table – {Hunter} got this set for his birthday, also. He doesn’t really understand the concept of these kind of toys yet, so they usually end up thrown all over the living room. The table is nice because it gives him a tabletop to build on, and provides storage for the blocks when they’re not in use. We have Legos also, but these are much bigger and easier for him to put together (and easier for me to see when I’m cleaning up! Have you ever stepped on a Lego?! OWWWWW!!)

LeapFrog My Own Leaptop – I’ve already purchased this as a gift for {Hunter}’s second birthday. It’s the same concept as the LeapFrog My Pal, you plug it into a computer with an internet connection to customize it. The Leaptop lets your child explore the alphabet, pretend play, music, animals and computer literacy with 6 learning activity stations.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer – If your child keeps stealing your iPad, this might be a wise investment. (Unless of course, you can afford to by them their OWN iPad.) Recommended for ages 3 and up, the LeapPad2 is the ultimate gift with – leveled reading experiences to help reading skills grow, creative play for unlimited exploration and discovery, 4GB of memory, and 325+ game cartridges & downloadable apps. (Five apps included. All additional games and apps sold separately.)

KidKraft Cook Together Kitchen – Prefer wooden toys to plastic? Looking for something to spark your child’s imagination? Every kid needs a play kitchen! (I know my sister and I played for HOURS in ours as kids!) This one comes fully equipped with a refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, microwave and washing machine! Don’t forget the pots and pans, and the play food!

5 to 7 Years

Legos are a pretty safe bet for the 5 and up crowd. With over 30 categories to choose from, you’re sure to find something that will keep your kids entertained!

8-13 years

I haven’t shopped for the tween/teen crowd lately, so I’m at a loss here. This Spy Net: Secret Message Invisible Ink looks pretty neat. Or maybe this American Girl Crafts Owls Sew and Stuff Kit for a girl? Of course, there’s always stuff like art supplies and board games.

14 Years & Up

For the teens, I wouldn’t attempt anything other than gift cards, unless you know them really REALLY well.

2012 Winter Wrap-Up #3: Festive Fun for Friends

I don’t know about you, but most of my friends are spread out all over the country, so we usually end up sending gift cards in order to avoid shipping costs.

But if you prefer to send an actual gift (or don’t have to worry about standing in line at the post office!), here are a few ideas!

I am kind of obsessed with someecards. Seriously. I know they’re occasionally dumb, but it’s like the lyrics of a song…sometimes they say exactly what I wish I could! SO…if you have a friend like me who can’t stop pinning or Facebooking these things – give them one for EVERY DAY OF 2013!!!! TF Publishing, who makes a ton of other awesome calendars by the way!), sells a 2013 Someecards Daily Desktop Calendar! All calendar pages are printed on FSC certified paper and use environmentally safe inks.

NOTE – If you know me personally, and are expecting a Christmas gift from me – you probably should not buy this for yourself…just sayin’!

I stumbled across Jen’s blog via a friend on Facebook. {Yes, it really is called PEOPLE I WANT TO PUNCH IN THE THROAT – how could that NOT be entertaining?!} The link took me to a post on Over Achieving Elf on the Shelf Mommies from last December. I. COULD. NOT. STOP. LAUGHING! {Oh, what is this “Elf on the Shelf” she’s talking about? Yeah, apparently everyone but me has one or two.} Now, in contrast, I do enjoy the Inappropriate Elf Contest that Jill @ Baby Rabies hosts…but I don’t have the time or creativity to do that myself, so I’m siding with Jen here.

The reason I bring this up in regards to gifts is because…Jen wrote a BOOK! Spending The Holidays with People I Want to Punch in the Throat If her blog is any indication, this will be a best-seller! It’s on my wishlist right now…*hint hint*

Speaking of books – I have a great one for your mommy friends. Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us This one came up on my Amazon recommendations, which judging by the title, probably should have been a red flag…until I read the table of contents! How can I not read a book that discusses “How to Sleep Until 9 A.M. Every Weekend” and “When Seeing an Infant Triggers a Mental Illness That Makes You Want to Have Another Baby”, because I want both of these things right now, which makes no logical sense whatsoever! *Adds to wishlist*

If you plan on attending any holiday parties this year, perhaps you should celebrate with some drinking games! There’s no time for sipping wine or eggnog, folks. You’re on a schedule! You need to get the quickest buzz you can so you have time to sober up a little before you have to go home to the babysitter! (I may or may not be speaking from experience.) My personal favorite is beer pong, but there are all kinds of ideas! Remember Plinko from the TV show “The Price is Right”? Now you can play DRINKO!

You and your friends not really the drinking type? No problem! Board games make fun gifts to pass the time on those chilly nights. My friends and I love playing Apples to Apples, and this year, they have a new edition – SOUR APPLES TO APPLES

2012 Winter Wrap-Up #2: Fabulous Finds for the {Whole} Family

Welcome to part two of the 2012 Winter Wrap-Up Series!

Shopping for family members is always difficult with so many different personalities to consider. Here are just a few suggestions that might make this year’s gift giving a little easier!

For the eco-friendly fashionista – there are some lovely jewelry pieces at Sophia Jane. My personal favorite is the Acai Colorful (pictured below).

Know someone who likes puzzles? This hometown puzzle is sure to be a hit! Just enter the “home” address of the recipient, and the puzzle will cover an area 4 miles north/south and 6 miles east/west of that address. Details such as named roads, contour lines, water features, and notable buildings are included!

If you’re shopping for a sports fan, check out the Amazon Fan Shop, where you can find team apparel, sports memorabilia, and more!

Need a unique gift for a pet lover? There’s a great selection of gifts at Uncommon Goods! My favorite is the DJ CAT SCRATCHING PAD!

Here’s a great one for ANYONE with any kind of gadget! The myCharge RFAM-0007 Portable Power Bank 6000 will keep your devices charged up to four times longer while you’re on the go! It can charge up to four devices at once, and includes a rechargeable 6000mAh battery, fully integrated Apple, Mini and Micro-usb connectors, and a USB out to charge tablets and other devices!

And if all else fails – you can always go with the old stand-by…

2012 Winter Wrap-Up #1: Great Gifts for Grandparents

In honor of the beginning of the holiday shopping season, I’m starting a new blog series! Welcome to the 2012 Winter Wrap-Up!

The first post in this series will focus on gift ideas for your children’s Grandparents (ie: your parents – but don’t think you can flake out on getting them a gift from YOU! More on that in a later part of the series!)

This will only be my son’s second Christmas, but in my experience, it seems that grandparents are pretty easy to shop for – they want something with their grandchildrens faces or artwork on it. Last year, for {Hunter}’s first Christmas, I bought my parents and my in-laws a photo Christmas ornament.

So, rather than post a ton of links here for you to browse through, I’ll make my first gift giving post a simple one.

1. Click on the Shutterfly image below.

2. Choose whatever strikes your fancy. Your kid’s mug could be on an iPhone case, a blanket (for real?!), a puzzle, or a mug! (A mug on a mug…hahaha – I’m easily amused.)

3. Be sure to enter the coupon codes for extra savings! Right now, you can get UP TO 50% OFF at their THANKSGIVING SALE! (No code required!), and there’s FREE SHIPPING on orders $30 or more when you enter code: SHIP30

Easy peasy. That’s two gifts down…
